There is nothing like the feel of ancient stone beneath
your feet or the sensation on your skin as you brush against a wall.
TRAVERTINE from UMBRIAN WHITE,
a slightly matt textured filled stone with a luxuriant, silky feel
and mingled shades of buff and cream to BYZANTINE BRONZE
called ‘noce’ or ‘walnut’ travertine.
From the cool white of DOLOMITE WHITE and the creamy
tint of CARMARGUE WHITE to the golden hues and
flamed pink tinges of the Holy Land collection. Honed, brushed,
polished, acid washed chipped edged and even hand chipped edged.
The ancients knew all about marble and prized it above all other
rock for their works of art. Marble is a metamorphic rock originating
as limestone that has been changed and crystallised by immense heat
and pressure over millions of years. We have marble in all its forms,
polished, honed, tumbled or brushed and ever changing colours and
shades from the pure white of THASSOS like a lump
of white sugar or hard packed snow to EMPERADOR DARK,
a really dark brown with bronze and milky white, translucent veins.
A harder and more durable stone, a metamorphic rock, from
the Greek word ‘ to change’ and until the movement of
the earth’s tectonic plates was shale or mudstone. The enormous
pressures involved in this shift changed their identities forever
giving us the flat layers we know now as slate – cleft, honed
or rivened.
As with the other stone the variation in natural colour is amazing.
The most commonly used being RUSTIC MULTICOLOUR, BURNT SIENNA,
RUSTIC PEARL, CHINESE RUST or AUTUMN MULTI which are all
description names of the same slate. It is probably fair to say
that it could be likened to New England in the Fall. It’s
sizzling, random patches of autumnal shades on a grey, sometimes
dark grey background is quite stunning and will enhance any home
from a cottage or barn conversion to an ultra modern pad.
Apart from this popular slate there is the sophisticated and modern
BAHIA GREY, the plain surface of this grey slate
is dappled by the merest suggestion of watermarks. Used as a cool
backdrop for modern or traditional furnishings, this material knows
how to play a supporting roll.
How about GRAPHITE BLACK? ‘Black on black’
with the added interest of an occasional chink of white through
the blackout. COPPER HONED is a sight to behold
with its pearlised blushes of copper, mauve and violet.
The list is endless – AFRICAN SILVER BLUE –
AMAZON GREEN – BEIJING GREEN – BRAZILIAN BLACK –
BRAZILIAN GREEN – CHINA BLACK – LILAC – RUSTIC
GREY – OYSTER – DOVEDALE GREY – SILVER SUNSET
– TROPICAL HAZE – to name but a few.
Slate comes in a variety of sizes from giant slabs of 90x90cm right
down to 10x10cm and even tiny mosaics on 30x30cm sheets.

A strong, hard sedimentary rock that varies in colour like
sand. From the flagstones, varying in thickness from 25mm –
35mm within each slab to the calibrated at 15mm INDIAN SANDSTONE
ideal for inside use.
The very word is synonymous with the reds, oranges and
yellows of the sun baked earth of sunnier climes. Navarra Terracotta,
where the rolling hills of red clay soils remind us that ‘terra
cotta’ is baked earth. This extruded variety is pale reddish-brown,
producing a warm but subtle effect. Handmade Terracotta –
here are the reds, oranges and yellows of terracotta’s traditional
rustic palette, a true joy to look at and live with.
